Joint founder in 1909 of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People and editor of its magazine Crisis for most of next 25 years. Prolific in articulating the cause of Black enfranchisement and Pan-Africanism in scholarly texts, novels and public demonstrations. Finally naturalized as a citizen of Ghana 1961.

W.E.B. Du Bois - Activist Leader (4 mins)
Ghana born and Catholic educated, subsequently (at the age of 25) a university student in USA and UK. His studies included aspects of theology, anthropology, philosophy and law, but with a bias towards social action. Contact with From 1949 back in Ghana he campaigned politically with demonstrations and strikes for national self-government. Prime Minister following independence in 1957. Subsequently at the fore of movement for Pan-African unity against white domination. His interest in Marxist ideas prompted his early FBI listing; there was invariably a moral priority in his thinking as visible in the title of one of his later books Consciencism.
